Baylor's Brittney Griner taken first in WNBA Draft

Bristol, CT (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Mercury selected Brittney Griner with the top overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft on Monday.

Griner, a center from Baylor University, led the Bears to their second national title in 2012 with a perfect 40-0 record and finished her illustrious career with an NCAA record 736 blocked shots in both men's and women's college basketball.

The 6-foot-8 Griner ranks second in NCAA women's basketball with 3,283 career points and is a two-time national player of the year and three-time consensus All-America selection.

She joins a Mercury squad that went just 7-27 last season, but features veteran standouts Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner.

Phoenix last had the overall top pick in 2007 and selected Duke's Lindsey Harding.
