(WZZM) - Doctors say the number of cases of diabetes are increasing in your children.

A new study done in Colorado looked at the number of children diagnosed with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes over an eight year period.

Researchers found the number of children with type 1 diabetes has increased 21%. They found a 30% increase in type 2 diabetes. The numbers are the same in both boys and girls and across most age and racial groups.

"Most of it is due to the obesity epidemic in children," said Dr. Dana Dabelea with the Colorado School of Public Health. "We saw similar increases in white and black children. The largest increase we saw was in Hispanic children."

According to the study, type 2 diabetes did not increase significantly in American Indian and Asian children.
