GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - For the firs time in ten years, a West Michigan high school golfer has won the prestigious "Mr. Golf" award.
West Catholic junior, Sam Weatherhead was notified Thursday night that he had won the honor.
Weatherhead was a state medalist at the Division 3 tournament two weeks ago. He also won five of seven tournaments he played in this past spring, including the Kent County Classic and the Forest Hills Invitational.
Weatherhead's accolade came three days after he qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Along with the "Mr. Golf" honor, Weatherhead was also named to the Super Team and is also a first team all-state selection.
The last area golfer to win "Mr. Golf" was East Kentwood's Matt Harmon in 2002.
