MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - Muskegon County drivers who want to renew their license plate tabs or license in person are out of luck.

The only Secretary of State office in the county is closing Wednesday. The office on Apple Avenue serves 700 customers a day. Tuesday was its last full day of business, before closing for renovations.

"We need a larger office to serve customers," explains branch manager Karen Keast.

Construction crews are creating a larger lobby with new counters, public restrooms, an expanded testing area, and a new kiosk to renew license plate tabs that's open 24 hours. The renovation project is to the point where it's no longer safe for customers to enter the building. Keast says the office will be closed from October 9 to October 29.

Keast says many of the services the office provides are available on the Secretary of State's web site. For services that can't be completed online, visitors will need to visit an office outside of the county.

Employees from the office are being reassigned to other branches while the renovations are completed.
