MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (WZZM) - The Central Michigan University professor suspended last week for having child porn on his computer has resigned.

William Merrill was suspended and barred from campus last week. According to the university, its information technology employees found "inappropriate material" on Merrill's computer Monday, and it suspended him that day. Isabella County prosecutors have charged him with four counts of possession of child pornography and with possession of a switchblade.

According to the university, Merrill had been placed on leave with pay on November 5th. By submitting a resignation letter, that leave has been terminated.

Merill was a professor in the College of Education of Human Services. His research focused on Internet censorship and the use of children in advertising
