GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The Grand Rapids Public Schools are teaming up with PNC Bank to help some of the Special Olympics Michigan's youngest athletes.

The PNC Foundation presented a $5,000 check Tuesday morning to support the Young Athletes Program. It's a Special Olympics pilot program that is being integrated into the curriculum at Grand Rapids Public Schools.

"It's been an awesome experience thus far," says parent Kristina Donaldson. "It's giving my son an opportunity to re-engage with his peers and to learn different sports, to have structure. That's very important for me and my family, and for Daniel for his development.

The Young Athletes Program is for children ages to 2-7 with intellectual disabilities. It introduces those children to the world of sports and prepares them for the Special Olympics competition beginning at age eight.

Tuesday's ceremony was held at the Ridgemoor Early Childhood Center on Inverness Rd. SE.
