GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-Hockey fans Saturdayhonored a West Michigan marine, injured in Afghanistan.

Corporal Robert Lee Thrailkill Junior carried the American flag out onto the ice during the Griffins game. Thrailkill, 21, also joined the team for the singing of the national anthem.

Thrailkill was injured by a bomb in October of 2010. After spending 25 months recovering at Walter Reed Hospital, he returned to West Michigan on December 1. Soon after, he joined the Grand Rapids Sled Wings, a hockey team for athletes with disabilities.

"It feels great, being retired and able to do something I can do every weekend, keep my strength up and keep my body in shape and all that. It's great to be on a team like that," says Thrailkill.

Thrailkill is a native of Pentwater, but now lives in Grand Haven.
