GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Temperatures in the single digits are causing some trouble for salt trucks.

When it is this cold, salt barely has any effect on the roads, so the Kent County Road Commission has been using a different concoction over the past few days.

"The crews will scrape off all the snow they can get, then before rush hour, we'll put a mixture of sand, salt, and calcium chloride down; to give it some traction," said Director of Maintenance Jerry Byrne.

For each of these frigid mornings, about 80 trucks have been out on the Greater Grand Rapids roads during this commute time. "Keep in mind, leave early, and you'll make it fine," continued Byrne."
