JENISON, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Special Olympics World Games start next week in South Korea, and two West Michigan athletes are part of Team U.S.A.
Amy Kaptein of Jenison will be competing in cross country skiing. She qualified by winning the gold at the state games, and has been busy training ever since.
"It's pretty cool to be part of Special Olympics and go somewhere far away, explore and sightsee and all that kind of stuff," says Amy.
"She was in Special Olympics for 17 years, and is very active," says Ruth Kaptein, Amy's mother. "She loves it, but it's been overwhelming, unbelievable. We're just very excited."
The other West Michigan athlete is Damon Cassese of Caledonia. He'll be competing in snowboarding.
Cassese and Kaptein begin their journey to Korea Thursday morning.
