GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A leader on the Grand Rapids School Board now hopes to be elected to a third ward seat on the city commission.

School Board President Senita Lenear announced Tuesday night that she is running for the seat held by James White, who is not running for re-election. White is endorsing Lenear for his post.

One key issue for Lenear is preventing gun and gang violence in order for schools to work better.

"I think that's a symptom of the apathy that exists in our community, and I'd like to restore this home ownership and restore and community and people embracing one another," Lenear told WZZM 13.

"I think she's got the right angle. I think the gun violence and the youth... when there's hope, they can develop their talents," said White.

Lenear says, if she's elected in november, she would be the first African American woman to serve on the Grand Rapids City Commission.
