GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Collaboration, not consolidation. That's what a task force says will work best for Grand Rapids.
The Community Collaboration Work Group was created in 2011 to determine if consolidating governmental services with Kent County would make the city more efficient and effective.
In a preliminary report released Wednesday, the group says Kent County communities should continue collaborating with one another, consider combining police and fire departments with adjacent communities, and establish a separate task force to determine ways to make the court system more efficient.
The report is a response to a group of community and business leaders called the One Kent Coalition, formed two years ago. That group is seeking to merge public services in Grand Rapids and Kent County to reduce costs and governmental barriers.
