The Grand Rapids Symphony kick-starts St. Patrick's Day celebrations with three Celtic fiddle performances sure to change the way you think about the violin. Nine-time All-Ireland fiddle champion, and original star of "Riverdance," Eileen Ivers joins Conductor John Varineau and the orchestra for a lively celebration of Celtic music. "Celtic Fiddle with Eileen Ivers," part of the Fox Motors Pops Series, will be presented Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, March 10 at 3 p.m. at DeVos Performance Hall.
Daughter of Irish immigrants, Ivers discovered Irish traditional music at the age of eight, and has since won over 30 championship medals for fiddle and tenor banjo performance. Ivers is a highly sought after performer who has appeared with over 40 symphony orchestras. Ivers' current band, Immigrant Soul, blends African, American, Irish and Latin music traditions.
"The band and I share a huge passion for performing live, but it is always extra special when we share the stage with symphony," said Ivers.
"The amazing palette of the orchestra works beautifully with the range of emotions of Irish music ... from the beautiful old, haunting airs to the upbeat joyous reels and jigs to the interactive songs with the audience singing and clapping along."
Described as "the Jimi Hendrix of the violin," Ivers will combine her uniquely imaginative and virtuosic fiddle playing with traditional Celtic works including "Loftus Jones," "Rights of Man," "Immigration Suite" and "Pachelbel's Frolics."
Ivers anticipates a spirited show with audience interaction. "It's wonderful to see a concert in a grand symphony hall transform into an intimate social gathering of an Irish pub."
