SAUGATUCK, Mich. (WZZM) -- A group that supports the consolidation of Saugatuck and Douglas has launched a campaign to win votes.
Monday, The Consolidated Government Committee unveiled a new logo composed of a large red heart and the word "Yes" superimposed over Saugatuck and Douglas. The group says they have worked for three years to merge the governments of the lakeshore sister cities.
In January, the state Boundary Commission approved the merger of Saugatuck and Douglas, but only five percent of residents were in favor of it. A month later, a petition was delivered to Lansing to prevent an immediate merger.
If the state approves the ballot measure, the vote could happen in the August or November election.
The "Yes" campaign is featured online at www.we-are-better-together.com and will begin appearing in the community in the coming weeks.
