GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- M-DOT is reporting that Fulton Street over the Grand River has now reopened after utility crews shut it down Tuesday to restore high voltage power lines attached to the span.

As a preventive measure Sunday, Consumers Energy temporarily re-routed power from four electric lines attached to the bridge which serve the downtown area. This was to prevent debris floating in the river from severing the lines and knocking out power to downtown.

City leaders say river debris collecting at the Fulton Street Bridge has since been removed by Kent County crews. Consumers Energy believes it is safe to return to the previous configuration for providing electric service to downtown.

Tuesday night's closure allowed the utility to re-energize the lines on Fulton Street.
