(WZZM) -- Communities across West Michigan are paying tribute to late and living veterans this Memorial Day.
Muskegon's parade was one of the first to start Monday morning. The bands, floats and lakeshore veterans were greeted with applause as they made their way down Webster Avenue to a Memorial Day ceremony at Hackley Park.
Parade grand marshal Gerrit Veldman says it was an honor to be chosen to lead the parade. On Memorial Day he often remembers the men he fought alongside who didn't make it home.
"You remember all the good times that you had with them and not the bad times," says Veldman.
In Grand Rapids, the marines kicked off this year's Memorial Day parade. The procession also featured wounded veterans, bands and city leaders who marched down Division Avenue to Fulton Street. The parade wrapped up with a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.
Walker also held a Memorial Day parade Monday. People lined Lake Michigan Drive in Standale to take in the procession, which included WZZM 13 employees and the Weather Chaser.
