GRAND RAPIDS(WZZM) - He may be 90 years old, but Carl Newberg of Grand Rapids still tees it up every week with his golf league --and often plays better than competitors half his age.

"I never hit the ball very well," Carl says modestly. "I've never had a long drive, but I've sunk a long putt."

Members of the St. Mary's Golf League call him "Steady Carl" because of his consistent play year after year, week after week.

"He always hits them straight," explains league president Steve Miller. "Never overly long but always straight."

Newberg turned 90 on Tuesday.

He celebrated at Highlands Golf Club in Grand Rapids with his sons and grandsons and fellow league members at their regular Tuesday night outing.

"He's given us a lot of pointers about golf and about life," says his son Carl, also a league member. "He's playing in the league with histwo grandsons, as well as histhree sons."

"I always show up to play," says Carl. "I've never been a real good golfer, but I've had more fun than most people. I've had a lot of fun out here."

Newberg isn't the best player in his league, but he's far from the worst. He's number 20 out of 28 players. Many of the men behind him are relative youngsters by comparison.

"Steady Carl," says league president Miller.
