GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (Grand Haven Tribune)-- Work to put a new coat of shiny red paint on Grand Haven's iconic lighthouses is progressing with a steady hand.

"It is all going very well," City Manager Pat McGinnis said. "We expect that it will be done by the end of this summer."

Construction crews currently have the inner lighthouse wrapped in scaffolding and sheathing while they blast lead-based paint off the structures. They are also working on the interior of the inner light.

"We're doing some spot repairs and doing some welding as we are going along," McGinnis said. "We're being very delicate with our maintenance (to not damage) the materials on the lights."
McGinnis said crews hope to be wrapped up with the inner lighthouse work by the start of the Coast Guard Festival later this month.
