EMERYVILLE, Calif., July 9, 2013 - CLIF Kid®, maker of organic snacks for active kids, today announced five individual finalists and one group winner for the third annual Backyard Game of the Year contest that rewards kids for creating original games designed to be played outdoors, in one's backyard. On July 27, the contest culminates in the Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs - an outdoor event that is open to the public at NTC Park in San Diego, where the individual finalists and group winner will teach kids how to play the games.
The individual game winner will be chosen by a panel of celebrity judges including professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, and Stacy Tornio and Ken Keffer, authors of "The Kids' Outdoor Adventure Book."
"CLIF Kid knows parents want their kids to build healthy habits they can carry into adulthood," said Jennifer Yun, brand director for CLIF Kid. "That's why we have programs like the Backyard Game of the Year contest to connect kids with outdoor play and exploration. The excitement and confidence our finalists experience while showing other kids how to play their games is something we hope inspires them to continue playing outside - even as adults."
As part of the Backyard Game of the Year contest, CLIF Kid challenged kids across the country to get physically active outdoors and spark their creativity by inventing original backyard games. At the Playoffs, the five individual game finalists will compete for the Backyard Game of the Year title and a $10,000 educational scholarship. The group game winner will select an eligible non-profit to receive a $15,000 donation from CLIF Kid.
The five individual finalists are:
• Card Sharks by Benjamin, age 9, Grandville, Mich.
• Home Before Sunset by Brett, age 9, Washington, D.C.
• Monkeys Go Bananas by Samuel, age 8, Placentia, Calif.
• Soccer Around the World by Tovar, age 8, Arlington, Va.
• Tic-Tac-Go by Joseph, age 6, Gulf Breeze, Fla.
The group winner is Dragon Frzz-Ball by the "MSFTS" from Jackson, Miss.
A free family event, the Playoffs will take place Saturday, July 27, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at NTC Park in San Diego, located along Farragut Road near Cushing Road. Guest judges Hawk, Tornio and Keffer will be on hand to choose the winning game in the individual category based on the game's originality, creativity and ability to be played outside using basic household items. Hawk will also sign autographs during a meet and greet.
The first 300 kids in attendance will receive a free t-shirt, while every kid will receive free CLIF Kid organic snacks to keep them nourished while they play. In addition, raffle prizes will be drawn and San Diego-based kid-folk band Hullabaloo will entertain guests with music throughout the Playoffs. Event details are available at www.clifkidbackyardgame.com
For the third year in a row, Children & Nature Network will receive a donation in recognition of their efforts to reconnect kids with nature. Please visit www.childrenandnature.orgfor more information about the organization.
Backyard game ideas were submitted online by kids ages 6 to 12 and their parents between March 20 and June 17, 2013. In addition to the five finalists chosen in the individual category, CLIF Kid also selected three finalists for the new group category.
The grand prize individual winner will receive a $10,000 educational scholarship and the four runners-up will each win a $1,000 educational scholarship. Each individual finalist will also receive a Specialized bicycle and a Bell helmet.
The three group finalists were announced in late June on the CLIF Kid Facebook page, where the public voted for their favorite game. For the group grand prize, CLIF Kid will donate $15,000 to the group winner's choice of a non-profit organization that focuses on kids' health and well-being. In addition, the two runners-up will each choose a non-profit to which CLIF Kid will donate $2,000.
Following the Playoffs, the rules from all finalist games will be posted on the CLIF Kid Backyard Game website.
