GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A major construction project begins this week in downtown Grand Rapids.
The city will begin reconstructing Monroe Center between Division Avenue and Sheldon Avenue and Monument Park this week. The construction is expected to last until mid-September.
The project includes removing sidewalks, walls, trees and street lights. The Soldier's Monument will be relocated and the base will be rebuilt. Water and sewer services, ornamental street lights, and Consumers Energy conduits will also be replaced.
Surface features of the park and walkways will be constructed later in 2013 and early 2014.
The trees that will be removed will be replaced with 2.5 to 3 inch caliper trees in later 2013 and early 2014. Some lane closures of Division Avenue will be necessary during construction.
The Downtown Development Authority has awarded $547,600 to Lodestar Construction for the project.
