Pro skater Tony Hawk and his fellow judges named 9-year-old Benjamin McCarty from Grandville, Michigan the winner of the CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs heldover the weekendin San Diego, California. Ben won a $10,000 educational scholarship for his creative backyard game "Card Sharks." At the Playoffs, kid finalists from across the country taught Tony Hawk and San Diego kids how to play their original backyard games invented for the CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year contest. Local kids and families played the games and enjoyed the fun day aimed at reconnecting kids with creative outdoor play - something that has waned in the digital age.
