(USA TODAY) - A vehicle crashed into a Kansas City, Mo., day care center Tuesday, injuring three children, The Kansas City Star reported.

Approximately 40 children were inside the day care, the Star said. Capt. Tye Grant, a police spokesman, told the website that the conditions of the three children taken to Children's Mercy Hospital were not known.

The injuries range from "mild to moderate," a spokeswoman said. Further details weren't immediately available.

Early reports had said the children were critically injured.

Children's Mercy Hospital is treating 3 children.

The driver of the silver and black SUV also was taken to a hospital. Apparently the SUV collided with a Cadillac, which was shoved into the building, several media outlets reported.

The accident happened shortly before 1 p.m. CT, (2 p.m. ET) at Christian Academy. According to early reports, two children were trapped under the vehicle.

Video from the scene showed multiple fire trucks on the scene; the car remained in the building.

A silver car and a black SUV hit the front of building, the Star said. A damaged power pole was tilting at a 45-degree angle in front of the building.

Firefighters carried wooden 2-by-4s into the building, the Star said.
