August 26th is National Dog Day! So what does this mean? National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Collen Paige, a pet lifestyle expert and author, to help pet-parents honor their dogs on a special day.
This is a day to celebrate everything about our dogs being "just dogs!" There is no breed ban; all dogs and breeds are honored! Let's celebrate their endearing love, loyalty, work ethic, companionship, patience, and tolerance of human-kind.
So pet-parents out there, grab your dog and their leash, and let's start celebrating!
Top 5 Things you can do to celebrate National Dog Day!
Take them to a Park
They deserve it, right!? Walk, ride, or jog, they don't care how they get there, they just want to get there!
The park is a perfect place to celebrate Dog Day! Bring their favorite toy, snacks, water (don't forget the bowl), a blanket, and poop bags (just in case they are so excited they have to relieve themselves).
Now sit back and play a game of fetch. When Fido tires out from that, it's time for a snack. Then, lie on the blanket with your best fur friend and tell him/her why they deserve a Dog Day everyday! They do don't they?
I Scream For Ice Cream
Ok, normally I am not big on giving a dog human food (I am a dog trainer), but there are exceptions. Training purposes only or celebrating National Dog Day!
So grab your dog and the leash and walk over to your nearest ice cream parlor. Majority of ice cream parlors now have special doggy ice cream treats. This is a perfect time to celebrate with the both of you relaxing and enjoying your individual ice cream treat! Mmmmmmm.....
Did you say masssssaggge?
A massage isn't just for humans, dogs need a little massage therapy every now and then too. Just think about all the hard work they do for us when chasing the cat away, retrieving endless tennis balls, getting into the trash, and barking at the neighbors walking by. I know there are some truly hard-working dogs out there, but the mischievous ones are hard working too - just in a different kind of way.
Call your vet and schedule a therapeutic pet massage for your best friend (yes there are certified vets that do this) and let Fido enjoy a relaxing massage.
Squeak, squeak, what's that?
A trip to your local pet store will have your dog wagging his tail non-stop. Take your dog to the pet store and let him/her pick out a new toy.
Trust me, you will get rewarded with many slobbery kisses and continuous squeaky noises throughout the day.
Your dog definitely deserves a new toy or two, maybe even three. They will know you truly appreciate them with this small gesture.
A Long Leisurely Walk
Yes, a dog's FAVORITE past time is a good walk! But hold on, this is Fido's day, so that means no strict "heeling" today. Let your dog enjoy all the scents around them, give slack on the leash so they can explore more then usual, don't walk fast, your fur buddy wants to take everything in.
Instead of a 15 minute walk, do a 30 or 45 minute walk. Remember, this should be a leisurely walk.
Well, after a much deserved, fun day with your dog, I am sure your best friend is ready for a nap. To wrap up their special day, let your furry canine curl up next to you for a little siesta as you whisper to them why they deserved all these special things on National Dog Day!
