SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WZZM) --In Spring Lake, organizers are working to put the discussion of bullying front and center, by forming a community-wide book club.

The group will team up with national best-selling author Emily Bazelon to read and discuss her book Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy.

To accommodate the large number of participants, the discussions will happen online every two weeks on Facebook and Twitter.

The community group will then be broken into smaller factions later on, to have more intimate discussions in person.

This is an important issue, says Spring Lake High School English teacher David Theune, leader of the book club. He says he was called to action after watching the documentary Bully, and reading student journals about their experiences with bullying.

"We need the schools and the community to work together to elevate awareness, education, and most importantly empathy. Only then will our schools and community grow and make it a better and safer place for our children," Theune says.

The kick off event is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Lake High School.
