LAINGSBURG, Mich. (WZZM) -Many insects aren't doing as well and some believe the reason has to do with our gardens.

This is turning in to such a big concern that theKent Conservation District will be holding a native plant workshop next week with the help of Vern Stephens, co -owner of Designs by Nature.

Stephens' main goal is to educate the community on what they can do to help.

He explained, "once we start seeing things like this happen, and we start seeing pollinators go down and decline in numbers, we start seeing food sources that aren't being produced. Our fruit trees don't get pollinated any more. When the habitat goes away, the critters go away."

The workshop will last from 6-8 pm this Wednesdayat 3260 Eagle Park Drive in Grand Rapids.

The first hour will focus on planning and designing the garden as well as preparing the garden site while the second hour will cover specific plants.

Plants will also be available for purchase after the workshop.

For more information, Stephens recommends a book by Doug Tallamy calledBringing Nature Home. Click here for the book's website.
