MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - Scouts, veterans and historians performed an American flag retirement service Sunday.
Flags that are worn, torn, faded or badly soiled should be "retired," according to United States law. In most ceremonies, that means flags are cut into pieces, then incinerated.
Muskegon Scout Troop 1053 held the ceremony at Veterans Museum in Muskegon. Scout leaders say participating in events like this is all part of their duty.
The Veterans Museum and other VFW posts have boxes year round to collect non-serviceable flags.
