(WZZM) - It seems like an apple a day can do more than just keep the doctor away.
New research in Britain showed the fruit can keep heart problems away.
Researchers found if adults age 50 and older had one apple a day, it would prevent or delay about 8,500 deadly heart attacks and strokes each year. That's just in Britain.
Also, the number of lives saved by an apple a day seems to be about the same as people over 50 who went on cholesterol drugs.
The findings were all based on mathematical models as opposed to observed evidence.
This isn't the first time an apple a day has been linked with health benefits.
A 2011 study showed stroke risk goes down nine percent for every 25 grams you eat of white fleshed fruit a day, including apples and pears.
