GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The U.S. Attorney's office in Western Michigan collected over $8 million from criminals in 2013; the money comes from fines, penalties and restitution in criminal and civil cases.
The $8 million recovered is just about the same as last year, but U.S. Attorney Pat Miles says there is increased emphasis of taking away property and other assets from offenders. Miles says going after criminals' assets is important because much of that money goes for restitution of victims' losses they suffered at the hands of criminals.
Miles also says in addition to the money going to victims of criminal offenses and fraud, they also share it with law enforcement agencies. He says none of it goes back to his office for operational expenses.
