GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- From the recent polar vortex to the pending snow accumulation, West Michigan residents are fleeing the frigid weather for warmer destinations.

Witte Travel & ToursinGrand Rapidssays their phones have not stopped ringing in recent weeks. That's because the great escape is on, as people look to trade sub-zero wind chills for sandy beaches.

Witte officials add that vacation bookings are currently up 20% from this time last year.

"Mexico, Jamaica and theDominican Republic are the top sellers right now," said Antonia Barczak, who is a travel consultant at Witte. "January, February, March and April are the busiest months for us typically, but the frigid temperatures have definitely helped the increase this year."

Barczak added that Witte Travel & Tours has hired additional employees this winter to help deal with the increase in vacation bookings.
