ROCKFORD, Mich. (WZZM) - Blowing snow and single-digit temperatures led to numerous accidents along U.S. 131 south of Rockford this morning, including a 10 a.m. crash near Post Drive with minor injuries.
Southbound lanes of the freeway were a hot-spot for slide-offs starting about 9 a.m. A Kent County sheriff's deputy described the freeway as "a sheet of ice'' and asked that the road commission be contacted to treat the southbound lanes.
Michigan State Police responded shortly before 9 a.m. to two accidents on southbound U.S. 131 between Ten Mile Road and Post Drive NE.
At 9:30 a.m., state police responded to a slide-off into the median along southbound U.S. 131 near 13 Mile Road, while in Grand Rapids, a slid-off on Int. 196 east of Coit Avenue NE near downtown caused traffic back-ups.
Periods of light snow will continue today with 1 to 3 inches possible. Southerly winds between 7-14 mph will drop wind chills to between 0 and 5 degrees.
