LAPORTE, Ind. (WZZM) -- Nearly 24 hours after escaping from the Ionia Correctional Facility, a convicted murder whose escape prompted a nationwide alert is under arrest.
LaPorte County Sheriff's deputies arrested 40-year-old Michael Elliot around 6:30 p.m.EST Monday following a short police chase.
Around 6:15 p.m. an employee at Aero Metals in LaPorte, Indiana witnessed a man drive away in his 2002 black Monte Carlo while it was warming up.
Police were alerted about the stolen vehicle and a deputy spotted it moments later and attempted to pull the driver over. The suspect led deputies on a chase into a rural area of LaPorte County. Authorities disabled the vehicle with stop sticks and arrested the driver.
Deputies say Michael Elliot identified himself to officers. He alsoreportedly stole four vehicles; a Jeep in Ionia, Mich. and vehicles in Shipshewana, Elkhart, and LaPorte, Indiana. He was reportedly still in possession of a hammer and box cutter, which he used in his escape in Michigan.
Elliott was booked in the LaPorte County Jail and is being held without bond.
LAPORTE, Ind. (WZZM) -- LaPorte County authorities say prison escapee Michael Elliot is in custody.
Deputy Dean Schultz with the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department confirmed Elliot's capture with WZZM 13's Phil Dawson. Schultz says Elliot was captured Monday evening following a short chase outside LaPorte city limits.
Elliot escaped from the Ionia County Correctional facility Sunday night. He carjacked a vehicle and the female driver, heading south to Middlebury Indiana. The woman escaped and called 911 but Elliot managed to get away.
