ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Flames and smoke could been seen up to one mile away when a house caught fire Thursday afternoon, according to Kent County emergency dispatchers.

The house, located on Algoma Avenue, between 11 and 12 Mile Road, caught fire just before 2 p.m.

Crews reported flames and heavy smoke upon arrival. The house is likely a total loss.

It appears no one was inside at the time of the fire.

Algoma Avenue is closed in the area while crews from Algoma Township, Sparta, Rockford, Kent City, Plainfield Township, and Alpine Township work to extinguish the blaze.
