GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Weeks of snow buildup was too much for a century-old garage, which collapsed in the city's East Hills neighborhood, damaging several historic cars inside and other vehicles.

The building at 949 Wealthy Street came down just before 1 p.m. Thursday, according to a witness who works across the street.

Owner Guy Bazzani says no one was inside. "Fortunately my staff member Sue was at lunch and out of the building at the time."

Laura Sullivan saw it come down from a neighboring building. "It was kind of shocking; at first we thought it was a planned demo, but then we saw all the cars in it and we saw that wasn't the case."

Bazzani says he had reinforced the building in the last decade, but it still wasn't enough to hold the snow.
