GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Richard Hayman, the Grand Rapids Symphony's principal pops conductor for 20 years, has died.

Hayman, known for his sequined jackets, was a self-taught harmonica player, music arranger, and conductor. He was appointed principal pops conductor in Grand Rapids in 1985.

Hayman also led the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony. He was also recognized for his contributions to Hollywood movies, when he received a star on the Walk of Fame.

Hayman died Wednesday of natural causes at the age of 93.
