(WZZM) - With near zero temperatures, it's hard for many of us to think about exercising. However, there are ways to stay active all year round.

Our partners at Grand Rapids Family Magazine have some advice for getting the whole family moving.

Aaron Toffoli, a Public Health Educator and Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist for the Kent County Health Department, says adults should get 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week.

But it's sometimes hard to find the time to exercise when you are busy with family responsibilities. So, Toffoli encourages parents to get outside with their kids. He says if you go to the playground, parents should get in on the action too. He also says in the winter, exercise can be as simple as a walk around the block. You can also rent skis or snowshoes for affordable prices at many West Michigan businesses or parks.

Toffoli points out that many parents assume kids are active, simply because they are kids. But, he says kids today are not as likely to spend hours playing outside as kids from 10 years ago, or 20 years ago. Plus, he says kids may not get as much exercise at school because there is often less time to spend on recess and gym class.

Toffoli has advice on indoor activities the entire family can do. He says family members of all ages and activity levels can do push ups, sit ups, and squats, among other stretches and exercises.
