MDOT patches up U.S. 131 in Kent Co.

ROCKFORD, Mich. (WZZM) -- U.S. 131 received some much needed patch work in northern Kent County.

Good weather and higher temperatures finally allowed MDOT crews to make the repairs Tuesday. Crews worked on the both sides of the highway between Rockford and Cedar Springs, but the patches are only a temporary solution to a much bigger problem.

"That whole stretch needs to be reconstructed, it is like having an aging car and bringing it to the shop all the time. We don't have the money to buy a new car, we have enough money to fix the brakes one year, fix the transmission the next year. Until we have enough money, it's going to continue to be like that," said MDOT spokesperson Jon Richard.

MDOT says repair crews will be out on that stretch of highway at least 10 more times before spring because the ground is still frozen and any patch work they do does not last.
