BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two weeks after losing their sister to pneumonia, relatives say fire has taken the lives of two brothers in Ionia County.
Flames were reported around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 5300 block of Hotchkiss Road.
Relatives say Tom and Stevie Smith died in the quick moving fire that destroyed their home. Firefighters say when they arrived on the scene the roof had already collapsed and flames were shooting out of the building, sending a plume of thick white smoke into the sky.
Relatives say the brothers had serious health problems that would make it difficult for them to escape the fire.
"One was in a wheelchair and was bedridden, but Tommy, he could walk but he was still crippled," Wendy Augistini told WZZM 13. "It would be difficult for them to escape and that's what makes it so hard for us to imagine what they went through."
The fire was extinguished but firefighters remained on the scene for hours investigating the cause.
