ALLEGAN, Mich. (WZZM) -- We're getting our first look tonight at the new sheriff's office and corrections facility in Allegan County.
It's located at the site of the old Haworth furniture building in Allegan. In two years, crews have transformed the building into a complex that houses 325 beds. It should end the problems with overcrowding that were common at the old jail.
"The old facility was originally built for 62 inmates and was now housing 173, and none of the additional housing was built to corrections standards," said Allegan County Sheriff Blaine Koops. "We had five studies that all said the facility was insecure for the staff as well as the inmates."
A public dedication ceremony at the new jail is scheduled for March 8.
