PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Van Buren County teenager who fell asleep at the wheel was nearly impaled by a fence post.
The incident happened Wednesday on M-40, north of Shaw Road. Deputies say the 18-year-old from Lawton was driving north on M-40 when he fell asleep and drifted across the road and into a farm field.
The man's Chrysler Pacifica continued for about 300 feet across the field when it hit a farm post and drifted back into the roadway.
The farm post penetrated the driver's side of the windshield and stopped just inches from the his body. The driver was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver was cited for careless driving.
