GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Local veterans want people to give the American flag the proper respect.

WZZM 13 spoke to members of the Grand Rapids VFW about how to display the American flag properly. The VFW commander says flags should not be damaged or worn down, nor should they ever touch the ground. He says a flag should be taken down in the evening, unless there is a light shining on it in the dark, and go back up in the morning.

The commander says he's also seen some people use an improper stand for the flag.

"It needs to be on a flag pole. They had it on a tree branch, and I stopped and let them know very nicely that is not correct flag etiquette. If you do want to display it, these are the ways you have to display it, I said, out of respect for the flag, for the country, and for the veterans," says Bill Jones, commander of VFW Post 830.

Jones says people must also fold the American flag properly before storing it.

He says never throw any flag in the garbage. Instead, take it to the American Legion, where it will be burned properly.
