IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- The National Weather Service confirms a weak tornado touched down early Monday morning as severe thunderstorms moved through the area.
The EF-0 twister struck at 12:20 a.m. near Reeder Road, north of I-96, about five miles southeast of the city of Ionia. The tornado, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, was 50 yards wide and on the ground less than a mile.
The NWS says it partially tore off one roof and damaged five other buildings. The twister also caused tree and crop damage.
The same storm system generated a high-end EF-1 tornado in Byron Center, Wyoming, Kentwood, and Grand Rapids two hours earlier, causing extensive damage to 50 homes and businesses in Kent County. Six people had minor injuries in that storm.
