BOWNE TOWNSHIP, Mic. (WZZM) -- Firefighters had to remove several people from a car in a ditch following a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon.
The one-car crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at M-50/92nd Street and Freeport Avenue, near the Kent, Ionia, and Barry county lines.
The driver, a 66-year-old woman, was killed. There were three others in the car, all of whom are her grandchildren. The passengers were a 10-year-old and two 13-year-old twins. One of the twins was pinned in the vehicle for an hour and a half. After being rescued, he was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Michigan State Police.
A witness at the scene says the driver was heading east on 92nd St. when she drifted to the right, hit a mailbox, then drifted to the left, over-corrected as she moved back to the right, slid into the ditch, and hit a large stump.
Eastbound and westbound M-50/92nd St. was closed between Wingeier Ave. and Freeport during the response. It has opened again.
