GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Musician Ray LaMontagne stopped his concert Wednesday night at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, criticizing an engaged couple in the front row for talking.
Shawn Virgo says he and his fiancee were whispering about using his hit, "You Are the Best Thing" as their wedding song when LaMontagne stopped performing a different song then began cursing at them.
LaMontagne stormed off the stage, saying he wouldn't start playing again until the couple left.
The audience booed until the couple walked out.
"It was embarrassing, humiliating, and in front of everyone," said Shawn Virgo, after he and his fiance were kicked out. "It was just whispers in the ear about our upcoming wedding and how excited we are. We were holding hands and talking about how excited we were that this was coming about."
WZZM 13 reached out to LaMontagne for comment but he has not yet responded.
A spokesperson with Frederik Meijer Gardens released the following statement:
"The on-stage interchange between Ray LaMontagne and two guests who were talking during last night's concert was an unfortunate situation during an otherwise great concert. We have been in contact with the couple, who were cooperative and apologized for talking and disrupting the concert. Although we offered to move them to another part of the venue, they chose to leave on their own. We sincerely apologize to all of our guests for this disruption."
The incident sparked various responses on social media.
