GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Opening ceremonies of the fifth annual Meijer State Games of Michigan were held Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Seven thousand athletes from around Michigan are competing in 39 different games, including BMX racing, cricket, track and field, and swimming.

Meijer State Games of Michigan is a signature event of the West Michigan Sports Commission, according to organizer Eric Englebarts.

"We've added eight different sports this summer: anything from horse shoes, bocce ball, water skiing, and one of my favorites is the urban downhill skateboard event that will take place Saturday afternoon. We look across the country and we have room to grow. We're setting our sights on 15,000 or 17,000 to compete with the nation's largest state games."

Athlete Jason Berciunas said he's excited to participate.

"It's something really good for the community, because it brings all the athletes together from all over the state of Michigan, and it brings a wide range of different types of sports together."

Spectator admission prices are $5 for people ages 10 and up. Children 9 and under are free. There is also a $5 parking charge.

The games wrap up on Sunday. Visit the event website at this link for more information.
