POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Ottawa County deputies are investigating whether a distress call from a boater was real or not.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call around 4 p.m. Thursday from someone who said they were on the Grand River near 68th Avenue in Polkton Township. The person told dispatchers they "were going down," and did not give further details.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department marine unit and a Coast Guard helicopter from Traverse City responded to the area and searched the river for the boat, but found no sign of a vessel in distress. Deputies also spoke to fishermen in the area, who said they had not seen a boat in trouble.

Crews discontinued the search late Thursday.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department at (616) 738-4000, or Silent Observer at (877) 88-SILENT (745368).
