GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- Buccaneers' varsity boys basketball coach Steve Hewitt died Tuesday.

Hewitt, who worked as a counselor at Grand Haven High School, was out jogging when he collapsed, according to an email sent out by Grand Haven High School Principal Tracy Wilson.

Hewitt graduated from Petoskey High School in 1981, earned a bachelor's degree at Taylor University, and his master's degree from Indiana University in 1997, according to the district. He was hired at Grand Haven High School as a counselor in 1999.

"Steve was just an incredible person, an amazing counselor, and a great coach," GHHS Principal Tracy Wilson said. "We are in shock and deeply saddened by this loss."

Hewitt had a 14-year coaching career in the district, beginning in 2000 when he was hired as the 9th grade girls basketball coach. In 2002 he coached 6th grade boys intramural basketball and was hired as the JV girls basketball coach. Hewitt then became the varsity boys basketball coach in 2005.

"Steve touched so many students' and staff's lives over the years," Wilson added. "He was a valued staff member, and our district will be impacted immensely."

Cam Hewitt, the middle of Hewitt's three sons, says his dad was a great man.

"He was such a good coach. He used that to affect so many people's lives. And I think he used it as well to get close with us."
