GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two teenagers, shot and wounded outside a popular restaurant in downtown Grand Rapids Tuesday night.

Multiple shots fired outside a different popular downtown bar early Sunday.

These incidents have some people wondering if the city is safe.

At Blues on the Mall Wednesday night, a big crowd gathered, though, and most people said they weren't afraid to come and enjoy the music.

Police were out on patrol and want to reassure the public. They say those recent incidents with guns are rare, and Grand Rapids is a very safe city.

"Grand Rapids is an extremely safe city," according to GRPD third-shift supervisor Sgt. John Wittkowski. "I can certainly understand people being...concerned about this sort of behavior. By and large, the downtown area is an extremely safe place."

A woman at Wednesday's concert said she wouldn't spend time downtown late at night, out of concern for safety.

"Yeah, I wouldn't walk the streets down here at night time."

Others, though, said they were confident the police would keep trouble at bay.

That's Sgt. Wittkowski's goal.

"We need to ensure that we are out here, doing our job and making it safe for the vast majority of citizens that come down here," he said.
