GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- This weekend marks 40 years since Gerald R. Ford became the nation's 38th President.

He took over after Richard Nixon resigned as a result of the Watergate scandal.

On August 9, 1974, Ford addressed a somber nation with words of reassurance, said Jim Kratsas of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

Ford "assumed the office in a bloodless transfer of power, and restored the faith in the nation," Kratsas said, "and that's what we must really thank Gerald Ford for."

To commemorate Ford's inauguration, the museum will be open for free on Saturday.
