Grand Rapids, Mich. (WZZM) Health officials in Kent County say more people are showing up in hospitals with stomach problems.

The Health Department says as of last week, the number of patients going to emergency rooms with gastro- intestinal illnesses is higher than the four year average for this time of year.

Doctors don't know if the cases are norovirus, but symptoms are consistent.. and include vomiting and diarrhea. They say this is a peak time for those kinds of infections, which is why they sent out notices mainly to restaurants.

Health Department officials say if anyone who works in the food industry is sick, they need to stay home. The Michigan Food Code requires food employees be symptom free for a minimum of 24 hours before they can return to work.
