GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A teenage driver suffered an arm injury after a large tree branch landed on her car Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened around 3 o'clock on Diamond Ave. near Race St.
The driver,Najee Billups, is a recent high school graduate. She was trapped inside the car until first responders arrived to help.
We talked to her grandfather Elmore Alexander. He says if the car was just a few inches in another direction Najee could have been more seriously hurt, "She was shook up but she was okay."
When the branch fell it pierced the windshield and hit Najee's arm. Kimberly Warner was on scene soon after the accident, "She was bleeding and we saw a neighbor lady running over with some towels and some water."
A forestry expert said the tree was decaying inside, even though on the outside it appeared green and healthy. . Phil Haan lives at 503 Diamond, "I've lived here for four or five years and it's kind of been falling apart for quite a while," said Haan. "I never thought a piece of it that big would come off."
As a precaution, crews from the city took the entire tree down. "We just felt it would better serve the safety of the public to take the tree down and clear the debris," said city worker Warren Bills.
Najee Billups did go to the hospital but was later released.
