GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Fire crews spent more than an hour overnight searching for the source of a possible fire in the Calvin College library. Instead, they found it was just a burned-out light ballast.

Fire crews from Grand Rapids and Kentwood got the call to the library off Burton St. SE on the Calvin College campus around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters began searching the second and third floors of the library, looking for the source of smoke and a haze inside the building. They eventually the problem was coming from a fluorescent light ballast, which provides voltage to start the lamp and regulates the current.

Firefighters began clearing the scene around 2:20 a.m.

The problem light fixture did not cause any damage, investigators say.
